Wayside crosses (German: Flurkreuze) are religious monument spread all over the south of Germany, especially the Allgäu region. They are found outside of cemeteries and churches.

The crosses express the plea for protection for all living things: the fields, animals and people, that they may be protected from storms or drought and that the crops may thrive throughout the seasons. This plea is often engraved in the base of the cross with phrases such as “Gott segne unsere Fluren” (God praise our meadows) or “Gelobt sei Jesus Christus” (Praised be Jesus Christ)

There are over 500 of them within a 15-kilometre radius of Leutkirch alone. The amount of crosses in this region is absurdedly high yet few people notice the ubiquity of of the crosses.

This work was made to clearly visualise an element very typical for this region which is rarely noticed. It is not intended to promote any religious ideology; the work is simply a depiction of the crosses.

Many thanks to the Arbeitsgemeinschaft Heimatpflege im württembergischen Allgäu e.V. for providing their very detailed map.
